Life moves slowly until, to the consternation of her town's racist white community, Scout's laywer father Atticus agrees to defend a black man who has been accused of raping a white woman. The story unfolds, told through Scout's innocent eyes as she grows up. The result is a tough and tender novel of race, class, justice, and the pain of leaving childhood.
